Fredericksburg, the seat of Gillespie County, was founded by German settlers in 1846 and became an International Dark Sky Community in 2020. The town earned it with a lighting ordinance, dark sky education, and work with local and state partners to cut light pollution. It asks residents and visitors alike to switch off outdoor lights they don't need.
The town is a good base for two International Dark Sky Parks. Just outside town, Enchanted Rock State Natural Area has wide, open ground and holds star parties, often with local astronomy groups, along with ranger-led night hikes. East of town, Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park became the area's second Dark Sky Park in 2021 and runs astronomy programs, sometimes with the Hill Country Astronomers bringing telescopes.
You can stargaze at either park on any clear night. For Enchanted Rock, reserve a day pass ahead, arrive before sunset and stay into the evening, and consider a weekday or an off-peak season, when the park is less likely to reach capacity. You won't need special equipment; the naked eye does well here, and binoculars add more.
