Enchanted Rock is best known for its granite domes, but its rural sky makes it one of the best public places to stargaze in Central Texas. The Milky Way is still visible here, and the park has taken significant steps to minimize its own night lighting. It is an International Dark Sky Park, though the park says its sky needs protection from encroaching city lights.
You can stargaze from almost anywhere in the park. Most trails close half an hour after sunset, but the Loop Trail stays open for hiking until 10 pm, and the park itself closes at 10. The gate shuts at 8, so arrive early; if you're camping and will get in late, call the park before 5 pm for the gate code.
Rangers hold star parties, which the park calls Rock Star Parties, to teach the constellations and maybe catch a shooting star; the events page lists them. Before you go, look up the park's dark sky monitor, which posts a reading every 15 minutes through the night. A reading above 21.5 magnitudes per square arcsecond means a very dark sky, and readings above 22.5 usually mean clouds.
The park is open 6:30 am to 10 pm and the gate 6:30 am to 8 pm. Trails close half an hour after sunset except the Loop Trail, open for hiking until 10 pm. Campers arriving late must call before 5 pm for the gate code. Campers arriving after the gate closes must contact the park before 5 pm to get the gate code.
