How dark is it, really?

Town and city glow hides all but the brightest stars and planets, and the Milky Way is not visible. (For the detail-minded: Bortle class 7–9, an estimate.)

When should I go?

Pick a night when the moon is down. The next stretch of moonless evenings is Nov 6–12.

What it's like

This is a small, specific place: the City Hall campus in Apache Junction, about 35 miles east of Phoenix at the base of the Superstition Mountains. The campus covers roughly 45 acres and holds the public library, the Multi-Generational Center, the police department, and city offices. Undeveloped desert borders it to the north and east, so coyotes, owls, lizards, and javelinas still pass through.

Expect a city sky. The city first looked at certifying the whole community, decided its closeness to the Valley's cities would be a major hurdle, and focused instead on the places where better lighting would do the most good. On the campus that meant replacing or modifying more than 200 outdoor fixtures to cut glare and spill, and adopting a Light Management Plan for future work, with a goal of full compliance within 10 years. A control system lets staff adjust the lights for evening events.

The grounds are open to the public until 10 pm, with longer access during city-sponsored evening events. The library and the Multi-Generational Center put on night sky programs, such as telescope viewing and guided walks after dark, and the city's registration site lists what's coming up.

The work reaches past City Hall. Two city sports parks, Prospector and Superstition Shadows, have earned DarkSky certification for their field lighting, and new development must now use compliant lights.
