Dark · Milky Way overhead, hazy lower down
3 stays nearby →Two desert districts on either side of Tucson, certified as an Urban Night Sky Place for keeping its skies starry close to a city.
The Milky Way is hard to make out here, though the main constellations and bright planets are easy to find. (For the detail-minded: Bortle class 5–6, an estimate.)
Pick a night when the moon is down. The next stretch of moonless evenings is Nov 6–12.

Saguaro is a different kind of dark sky place. Its two districts sit on either side of Tucson, the Rincon Mountain District to the east and the Tucson Mountain District to the west, and the city is only a few miles away. In 2023 it was certified as an Urban Night Sky Place, the second in the National Park System. Even so, starry skies can be seen throughout the park.
Many trails close to visitors when the gates shut at 8 pm, but Sonoran Desert winters bring plenty of darkness before the night gets late. In the Rincon Mountain District, the 8-mile Cactus Forest Drive has overlooks and pullouts where you can park and look up, and the Loma Alta Trailhead at the park's southern edge is a good dark spot. In the Tucson Mountain District, the unpaved 5-mile Bajada Loop Drive is closed to cars from dusk to dawn but open to walkers, and the Golden Gate Multi-Use Trail starts from a pullout on Picture Rocks Road.
The Sonoran Desert comes alive after sunset. Elf owls are out, bats search for food, and the saguaro opens its flowers in the dark to be pollinated. Use a red flashlight to keep your night vision. The park hosts star parties and night hikes, listed on its calendar.
