Watoga's name comes from the Cherokee word for "starry waters." The park sits in heavily forested Pocahontas County, among small communities and farms, with the undeveloped Monongahela National Forest and designated wilderness nearly surrounding it. Amateur and professional astronomers and photographers have come here for the night sky for years. The Dark Sky Park designation, from 2021, covers Watoga together with Calvin Price State Forest and Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park, nearly 20,000 acres in all.
The simplest way to see it is to stay the night. Cabin guests and campers can visit the park's designated night sky viewpoints at any time. The campgrounds are open spring through fall, weather permitting. By day there's boating, fishing, hiking, swimming, a museum, and an observation tower.
Watoga has one more nighttime show. In the summer of 2020, the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources confirmed synchronous fireflies in the park, the only species in the country whose members flash in unison as part of their mating display. Watoga is one of just four places in the United States where the public can watch them, and the dark sky designation adds protection for fireflies, whose numbers experts say light pollution has helped reduce.
