How dark is it, really?

Dark enough to see the Milky Way overhead on a clear night, though glow from nearby towns washes out the sky near the horizon. (For the detail-minded: Bortle class 4, an estimate.)

When should I go?

Pick a night when the moon is down. The next stretch of moonless evenings is Nov 6–12.

What it's like

Natural Bridge is a 200-foot limestone arch in a gorge carved by Cedar Creek, on land once owned by Thomas Jefferson. The park became Virginia's 37th state park in 2016 and an International Dark Sky Park in April 2021, one of four Virginia state parks with the designation, and it hopes to encourage the towns around it to take outdoor lighting seriously.

The first thing to know is that the park closes at dusk. You see its night sky by joining a ranger program, so check the Virginia State Parks dark sky events calendar before you plan a trip. The park's Dark Sky Nights meet at the Skyline Trailhead parking lot and follow the sky: new moon nights, a mountain moonrise, a watch for the Geminid meteor shower. There are also astrophotography sessions under the bridge itself.

By day, 10 miles of trail cross forest and meadow with views of the surrounding mountains and the James River valley. Reaching the bridge means a stairway of 137 steps; ask at the visitor center if you need an accommodation. For a night on site, Blue Hollow has a few primitive group tent sites, reserved in advance.

Getting in after dark

The park is open daily from 8 am to dusk. After-dark visits are through ranger-led programs such as stargazing, sunset hikes and lantern tours.
