Rappahannock County Park
Some light pollution · Constellations, not much Milky Way
3 stays nearby →A historic farm park on the Blue Ridge's eastern flank, about an hour from Washington, D.C., with a pond-side observation area that stays open to stargazers until 2 am.
The Milky Way is hard to make out here, though the main constellations and bright planets are easy to find. (For the detail-minded: Bortle class 5–6, an estimate.)
Pick a night when the moon is down. The next stretch of moonless evenings is Nov 6–12.

Sky Meadows closes at dusk, but one corner stays open for the sky. Turner Pond is the park's designated Dark Sky Observation Area, and you can arrive any time of day and stay after dark, as long as you leave by 2 am. Pay the regular $10 parking fee, display the yellow hang tag, park in a designated lot, and walk out to the viewing field. Turner Pond is for looking up, not for sleeping: overnight camping isn't allowed there.
For company and telescopes, come on one of the monthly astronomy programs, when volunteer astronomers lead a tour of the sky and aim telescopes at deep-sky objects. The visitor center stays open late on those evenings. The park's event listings have the dates.
If you want to spend the night, the camping is year-round, primitive, and tent only. Campers walk their gear 1 mile up the Hadow Trail from the overnight parking area to sites with pit toilets and non-potable water. There are no cabins and no drive-up sites, and reservations are recommended.
By day the 1,860-acre park is pasture, woodland, and the farm history of the Crooked Run Valley, with 22 miles of hiking trails and a stretch of the Appalachian Trail. The name goes back to a former owner who called the place Skye Farm, after the Scottish island.
The park closes at dusk, but Turner Pond, its Dark Sky Observation Area, can be used after dusk; visitors must leave by 2 am and pay the regular $10 parking fee.
