Dark enough to see the Milky Way stretch across the sky on a clear night, with only a faint glow from distant towns low on the horizon. (For the detail-minded: Bortle class 3, an estimate.)
Pick a night when the moon is down. The next stretch of moonless evenings is Nov 6–12.

Crestone is a village of about 150 people in southern Colorado, at the foot of the western slope of the Sangre de Cristo Range in the northern San Luis Valley. It began as a mining town around the turn of the 20th century and is now known as a spiritual center, home to groups from several of the world's major religions. The 14,000-foot Crestone Peak and Crestone Needle rise just east of town.
Protecting the dark has been part of local life here since the mid-1990s, and the town became an International Dark Sky Community in 2021. The local Dark Sky Crestone Foundation puts it simply: this is a community that can still see the Milky Way with the naked eye. The foundation holds public talks, educational symposiums, and festivals, and it encourages neighbors to talk with each other about lights that shine where they shouldn't.
Crestone was also among the first towns in the country to write the "rights of nature" into local law, and its care for the night sky sits alongside that. By day, the Sangre de Cristo foothills offer camping, fishing, hiking, and rock climbing; by night, the foundation's stated aim is to protect the natural night sky for future generations.
