Flagstaff has been at this longer than anyone. In 1958 it passed the world's first outdoor lighting ordinance, and on October 24, 2001, it became the world's first International Dark Sky Place. It is a working city, so expect some glow in town, but its lighting restrictions are enforced. It has shown that a growing city can protect its night sky without giving up on growth.
Astronomy runs deep here. Lowell Observatory, where Pluto was discovered, has welcomed visitors for more than 125 years with evening programs and telescope viewing, and it holds a Pluto Festival each February. Flagstaff also helped train the Apollo astronauts and map the moon, and the U.S. Naval Observatory has a station here. Some observatory programs need reservations, so check ahead.
For a darker sky than town gives you, head into the surrounding forests, parks, and high desert, which are close by and far from city lights. Clear, moonless nights are best, and late spring through early fall usually brings the most reliable viewing. Each year the city celebrates with the Flagstaff Star Party and Celebration of the Night, which has included star party nights at Buffalo Park.
