What it's like

Helper sits along the Price River in Carbon County, on the eastern side of the Wasatch Plateau, about 120 miles southeast of Salt Lake City. It's a small town proud of its mining and railroading past, and it counts art, architecture, and cultural events among the things that make it worth a visit.

In 2020 Helper became an International Dark Sky Community, the second in Utah and the 25th in the world. It took more than two years of work, and the town describes the certification as a commitment to protecting the night sky and sharing it, with more energy-efficient, sustainable lighting and public education about the dark.

The easiest way to see Helper's sky with company is through the local Dark Sky Observers, who have led regular astronomy programs and special events in the area. The town hopes the certification will help those programs grow and bring astronomy visitors to neighboring communities too. If you're planning a night on your own, DarkSky International suggests timing your trip around the new moon.
