Exceptional darkness · Milky Way obvious

Pick a night when the moon is down. The next stretch of moonless evenings is Nov 5–12.

Badlands sits in a rural stretch of western South Dakota, and its remote country, dry air, and lack of nearby light open up broad views of the Milky Way over the formations and prairie. It became an International Dark Sky Park in 2025, after the park retrofitted its outdoor lighting to cut light pollution and began monitoring the quality of its night sky.
The park is open all night. In the North Unit, the two main roads are the Badlands Loop Road and Sage Creek Rim Road. The South Unit has no road running through it, though you can drive up Sheep Mountain Table or take a scenic drive around its edge. Roads may close in winter or in extreme weather, and park alerts post closures on the park website.
Rangers lead night sky programs through the year, and the park holds an Astronomy Festival every July that draws astronomers, photographers, and educators. Lakota star knowledge is part of how the park and its partners talk about this sky. Pack for the forecast, whatever the season: that might mean sunscreen and a hat, or a warm winter jacket and snow pants.
The park is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Roads may close in winter or extreme weather.
