What it's like

Cape Lookout is three barrier islands, North Core Banks, South Core Banks, and Shackleford Banks: a low ribbon of sand, dune grass, and salt marsh 56 miles long. The islands are open 24 hours a day, all year, weather permitting, and the Park Service counts their skies among the darkest on the East Coast. Sky quality readings run about 21.4 on the islands and 21.2 at the mainland visitor center.

Only the Harkers Island Visitor Center, at the end of Island Road, can be reached by car; the islands take a ferry or your own boat, and the ferries run on the weather. Many people watch the sun set and then drive home. The park suggests staying: check when the moon rises and sets, aim for nights near the new moon, pack layers because beach nights turn cool, and use red light. Its astronomy page lists stargazing events.

To stay the night, camp on the beach. There are no established campgrounds; camping is allowed on most of the islands, generally without a permit, for up to 14 days. Vehicles with an off-road permit can camp on North and South Core Banks, seaward of the dunes, while Shackleford Banks is tent only. Bring long stakes and a tent with insect netting built to stand up to wind. South Core Banks has seasonal restrooms, showers, and drinking water; North Core and Shackleford have no drinking water. Fires go below the high tide line, and all trash leaves with you.

Getting in after dark

The seashore's three barrier islands are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, weather permitting.
