Much of Voyageurs is lakeshore with open horizons, and on a clear night that gives you a lot of sky. Planets shine, meteors cross overhead, satellites drift by, and now and then the northern lights color the northern sky. Summer is the best season for the Milky Way, when it looks densest and is easiest to see.
Two easy-to-reach spots are designated for stargazing: the Meadwood Road Day Use Area on the Ash River Visitor Center Road, and the upper parking lot at the Rainy Lake Visitor Center. Beyond those, lakeshores, clearings along the trails, and campsite docks all have wide views, especially with no lights nearby. The park holds star parties each year with rangers and staff.
Give your eyes 20 to 30 minutes, and use a red light; a single flash of white light sets your night vision back several minutes. Bring a blanket or chair and binoculars if you have them. If the dark makes you uneasy, the park notes that wildlife very rarely approaches people here, and that animals are drawn to food left out, so lock yours in a bear locker. Better still, bring a friend and share the view.
